Wildlife officer Adam Warwick stripped off and jumped into the sea to save the bear who bolted into the water after being hit by a tranquiliser dart.

The 26-stone black bear had bolted into the water in fright after being shot with a tranquilliser dart when it was found roaming a Florida beachfront neighbourhood.

However, as the paralysing drug took effect, the panicked creature thrashed and flailed in the waves, struggling for survival. SEE THE AMAZING PICTURES

For those trying to trap a bear, here are some golden rules.

One: Don't fall into your own bear-pit.

Two: If you do fall into your own pit, make sure the bear is not around.

Three: If first two rules have been broken, hope your comrades don't run away.

Clearly no one told Makhan Khan and his fellow hunters as they tried to drive an Asiatic black bear into a prepared pit by waving sticks and a blazing torch.

As these amazing pictures show, the bear, which had wandered too close to the village of Gassoo, in Kashmir, has other ideas.

It rounds on the men, who flee in terror. In the panic, Mr Khan is half swallowed in the camouflaged pit and the advancing animal swats aside his flailing stick.

As his comrades make good their escape, the bear grabs Mr Khan's head. Screaming, he drops further into the pit until only the top of his head and hands remain visible.

The bear, losing interest, ambles away.

Mr Khan suffered multiple injuries but survived - which is more than the hunters had planned for the bear.

Had they been successful, it would have been killed for its pelt and meat.

An agency photographer captured Mr Khan's plight while on assignment to highlight the illegal hunting of bears in Kashmir.

A wild whitetail deer jumped from the top of a 20 foot wall into the tank of two young polar bears at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium this morning.

And the apparently feisty forest dweller survived the encounter, at least for a little while.

On land and through the water, the bears chased the deer around in circles for a few minutes after he plunged into the cold water at 11:30 a.m., but they never mounted an attack, zoo officials said. Zoo keepers eventually lured the bears and the deer into holding pens. But the deer went into shock after the incident and had to be euthanized.

Before that, though, the buck gave the brother bears, who will turn 3 this month, quite the tussle, zoo officials said. As zoo patrons watched, the deer kept the curious bears at bay with head butts and hooves, forcing them to back off when they came near their unusual visitor, said Dr. Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo. The whole ordeal only lasted a few minutes and was caught on the camera that shows a live feed from the polar bear exhibit.

"The young bears didn't know what to do . . . and the deer was an aggressive animal," she said, adding the situation probably would have ended differently with older bears. "They're very inquisitive and very curious," she said of the young bears, "but they don't have that killing instinct."
