A bus driver was literally caught with his pants down yesterday when he left his vehicle to answer a pressing call of nature.

The hapless driver then could do nothing but watch on helplessly as the runaway bus rolled across a footpath and two lanes of traffic before mounting a second footpath and slamming into the front of a house in Park St, East Hills at 7.30am.

Police said the driver - who had earlier been shuttling commuters between Macarthur and East Hills railway station in Sydney's southwest - had left the empty bus for "a very short period of time while he went to answer a call of nature".

Houseowner David Bown was asleep in a bedroom in the front of the house - which sports a sign warning motorists it is a bus zone - when he was woken suddenly by the sound of screams.

His 17-year-old son was also in the house.
