German police dogs to wear shoesSubmitted by frostfire on Wed, 2008-02-27 08:53. dogs | german | police

Police dogs in the western city of Duesseldorf will no longer get their feet dirty when on patrol — the entire dog unit will soon be equipped with blue plastic fiber shoes, a police spokesman said Monday. "All 20 of our police dogs — German and Belgian shepherds — are currently being trained to walk in these shoes," Andre Hartwich said. "I'm not sure they like it, but they'll have to get used to it." The unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, Hartwich said, but rather a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries on duty. Especially in the city's historical old town — famous for both its pubs and drunken revelers — the dogs often step into broken beer bottles. "Even the street-cleaning doesn't manage to remove all the glass pieces from between the streets' cobble stones," Hartwich said, adding that the dogs frequently get injured by little pieces sticking deep in their paws. The dogs will start wearing the shoes this spring but only during operations that demand special foot protection. The shoes comes in sizes small, medium and large and were ordered in blue to match the officers uniforms, Hartwich said.

An attempted carjacking was foiled and the suspect captured when he ran and became mired in freshly poured concrete at a construction site, police said. Construction workers helped nab Rudy Aguas after police said he pistol-whipped a motel guest packing luggage into a truck Tuesday morning. According to police, the 30-year-old guest of the Courtyard by Marriott was leaving the hotel and packing his luggage, while his girlfriend and small child were in the vehicle. Aguas, 25, allegedly placed a pistol to his head while the man stood at the rear of his truck. Another suspect stood by the open driver's door near the woman and their child. Police said Aguas demanded the vehicle and struck the man three times in the head with the butt of his gun. The suspects fled after the victim grabbed for the gun and it fired in the air. An officer saw Aguas running and followed him into a building, where he ran into a freshly poured concrete floor, police said. Aguas was tackled by construction workers and arrested.

Residents of The Dalles are taking the radar guns into their own hands. The police are lending the guns to people concerned about speeders in their neighborhoods. "If they find one that has excessive speed, we will send a letter to the registered owner of that car," said Chief Jay Waterbury. "If it can help eliminate an accident or two, it's well worth it." So far, 14 people have signed up for the Citizen Radar Patrol Program. Many keep watch on streets near schools.

Man bribes policeman to get out of a breathalyser test, turns out he passed the test but was fined for briberySubmitted by frostfire on Sun, 2007-11-04 07:06. breathalyser | bribes | police![]() A Malaysian man apparently fearing he had too much to drink tried to play it safe by bribing a policeman to avoid a breath analyzer test. It turned out he passed the test, but was fined for bribery. Aw Cheng Fatt offered a police officer 50 ringgit ($15) after his car was stopped at a police check point for drunk driving three years ago, The Star reported Wednesday. The alcohol screening test showed the man's blood level was in fact within the permissible limit. However, Aw wound up getting arrested for corruption and was fined 1,000 ringgit ($300) in court Tuesday, the report said. Court and police officials could not immediately be reached to confirm the report.
