Almost 30 years after the discovery of Pluto's large moon, Charon, a University of Hawaii astronomer has used a ground-based telescope to take an image of the Pluto system that exceeds the sharpness possible with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Astronomers used the monster twin Keck 10 meter telescopes.  In the photo above Pluto is the larger of the circular blurs, and its big moon Charon is the smaller blur.

To give you an idea of size, Pluto is 2300 km across (smaller than the Earth’s Moon) and was about 4.8 billion kilometers away when that image was taken.
